Scholarly and critical textual philology has a history dated back to the famous Ancient Library of Alexandria. The process of comparing text versions and providing references to other texts is one of the earliest examples of building a network to make the archived cultural heritage available and reusable to a wider public. Still, this kind of textual matrix is underrepresented in current projects of digital cultural heritage. The aim of this course is to give an introduction to theoretical and practical issues of digital philology as well as to overview the current debates on the materiality of literature. During the course participants can gain a closer understanding of encoding systems such as XML, Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) or XML XSLT, and search engine queries. On the last day we organize a poster session for students to help them display their knowledge in the scientific discourse.
The training school is part of the Training Digital Scholars: Knowledge Exchange between V4 and Austria Series financed by the Visegrad Fund Project No. 21820079 and it will be hosted by the Centre for Digital Humanities at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. It is open to scholars of all academic stages, ranging from bachelor students to established researchers.
*** Non V4/Austria participants are also welcome! ***
